Number and Place Value

Number and Place Value are the unerpinning disciplines of maths.

Number – number sense is about building knowledge and understanding of the number system, quantities and relationships.

Place value. Based upon the number ten this is a series of columns or places, each ten times bigger than the one on its right or ten times smaller than the one on its left.

Where a digit appears tells us its value. E.g. a 2 in the hundreds column is worth 200; in the tens it’s worth 20. Place value allows us to make any number we want from the ten digits that we have.
